If you’ve ever stood in front of the fridge at 5:00pm wondering what on earth to cook, you’re not alone.

Meal planning can feel like one more thing on the to-do list, but trust me — once you have a simple system in place, it WILL save you time, money, and stress.

How To Set Up Stress-Free Dinners for Busy Families

Here’s my 5-step meal planning method that works whether you’re cooking for one, a couple, or a busy family.

Step 1: Check Your Calendar

Before you even think about recipes, take a look at the week ahead.

Which nights are busy?

Which nights will you have more time to cook?

Are there events, sports clubs, or late work meetings?

💡 Pro tip: Plan quick meals or leftovers for your busiest nights, and save more involved recipes for quieter days. I use a huge whiteboard in my kitchen as a hub and part of my Sunday Reset routine is to update the board

Step 2: Shop Your Kitchen First

Before making a shopping list, check what you already have in your fridge, freezer, and pantry.

That half bag of frozen peas? Add them to a stir fry.

Those tins of chopped tomatoes? Perfect for pasta sauce.

This step stops food waste and keeps your food bill lower.

💡 Pro tip: I’ve created a free printable freezer audit list template you can grab here so you don’t even have to get up from your chair!

Step 3: Pick Your Recipes (But Keep It Simple)

Choose 3–5 main meals for the week. You don’t need a brand-new recipe every night.

Mix it up with:

Family favourites (less thinking!)

Batch-cooked meals (chilli, curry, pasta bake). You could even make one and freeze one (cooked to reheat later or make a freezer dump bag) to save time another week

Quick wins (omelettes, wraps, stir fries)

💡 Pro Tip: Pick a theme like Fakeaway Fridays, Leftover Mondays or Sausage Tuesdays. This limits your options and makes choosing week on week a little easier

Step 4: Write Your Shopping List

Now you know what you’re cooking, write your shopping list by section:

Fresh produce

Dairy & chilled

Pantry

Freezer

This makes shopping quicker and stops you doubling back down aisles.

💡 Pro Tip: Use shopping list apps like ‘Bring’ which automatically categories your shopping list. You can even set the app up so your list flows in the same order as your favourite local store

Step 5: Prep Ahead Where You Can

Even 10 minutes of prep can make a huge difference during the week.

🔪 Chop veg and store in airtight containers. If you’re a small family like us you can flat freeze individual ingrediants so you can grab what you need, when you need it.

🍚 Batch-cook grains like rice or quinoa. Fun fact: freezing some carbs like rice and bread increasing the amount of resistant starch, making it healthier for you too!

🥩 Prep and marinate proteins in advance. Amplify flavour, save time and cleaning chores when time is precious

When dinner time rolls around, you’ll be so glad you invested in yourself in advance.

Final Thoughts

Meal planning isn’t about perfection — it’s about having a guide so you can relax knowing dinner is sorted.

Once you get into the habit, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without it.

And hey, we’ve all been there – sometimes things change and the plan needs to adapt!
