Declutting Update – B
Alphabet Decluttering update, this week is the letter B!
Ideas: Bedding, Bathroom, Books, Beauty Products, Bathroom cupboards and storage, Baby items, Baskets, Brooms, Buckets, Bowls, Bottles, Batteries, Bedrooms, Broken items, Boxes, Bags, Belts, Bras, Boots, Brushes (Hair, dustpan, makeup), Bridal items
At the beginning of the week I was off to a quick start again with this one and posted some Bridal items on vinted which sold super quick, which encouraged me to pick again.
Next I chose bedding… now before Christmas I already had a big clear out of bedding, but I chose to store them to use as dustsheets but realistically I had far too many so I’ve sorted a bag out and am looking to donate them to local cat and dog centers, just waiting to hear back to find out which ones accept them.
Not trying to over-achieve with the decluttering, I also managed to pass on some baby bits to family and friends that Amelia had outgrown so that cleared up a little bit more space, but this feels like its going to be a monthly thing I’ll need to keep on top of.
Home Organisation Update – “Run Your Life like a Business”
This week when I was back at work I was chatting to one of our seniour managers and I was reminded of a guest speaker we once had from another country. He told us about how him and his wife (both in senior management of global companies) ran their home as they would a business and its a philosophy that stuck with me, and its something I implemented into our routine when we bought the house together.
Weekly; we touch base on the week(s) ahead, and make sure we’ve got everything in advance. We have a recurring invite for Sunday evening, as typically we’re both home without any commitments. We update the whiteboard or paper planners, create our meal plan and shopping lists.
Monthly; we take a look at home admin, finances and tasks. We’ve started using Microsoft To Do to help with this and its been really useful for me to share the mental load of running things without feeling like I’m nagging.
Quarterly; we take a deeper dive into finances and cross-check with our spreadsheet to make sure we’re on track. We have seasonal tasks we like to make sure we’re ahead of like tying things down for winter, having a good clean up in spring and stocking up in summer which keeps us ahead of the curve. This year we’ve added applying for childcare to the list too.
Yearly; we think about things like our goals and holidays, and this year again childcare has been a really important thing to factor in.
Running life like a business doesn’t take a lot of effort, but it keeps us really organised. In fact while I was on maternity leave we were a bit lax and things pretty much ran on autopilot which was really helpful while we navigated being new parents and didnt have the time energy or focus. I know its not for everyone, but it was an interesting concept to me that stuck. I was really surprised at how simple it was and I’d encourage others to do the same.
Meal Planning
This weeks meal plan was a bit out of kilter with the food shop as we had a busy weekend, so it was improvised to say the least! However we still managed to keep a relatively healthy-balanced week… propped up by fresh fruit and freezer vegetables I must say!
Its been almost a year since I found time to do my food audits so thats hot on my list for this weekend. My goal is to spend as little as possible for the rest of the month on food, now this is a little tricky with Amelia’s recent blueberry addiction but I’m confodent we can keep the rest of the months food spend to a minimum.
A clear weekend!
My gosh, what is one of these! This is the first weekend since the middle of September where we have had NOTHING in the diary, and goodness do we need it! Overall its been another successful week but I’m ready to get my teeth into some jobs around the house and have a bit of a relax. Usually I’d be straight to the beach for a walk with Ted, but he’s picked up a limp this week and has a swolen elbow so he also needs to rest up over the weekend too – maybe its a sign from the universe to do some tea meditation and recharge the batteries!
Love, Jo-Anne x
