Feeling overwhelmed by a messy home and a hectic schedule? You’re not alone!
The “Sunday reset” is a powerful practice that can completely transform your family home, setting you up for a successful and stress-free week.
In this comprehensive guide, we’ll dive into the benefits of this simple yet effective routine and provide actionable tips to help you master your own Sunday reset.
What is a Sunday Reset?
A Sunday reset is a dedicated time to prepare your home and your mind for the week ahead. It’s not about deep cleaning the entire house, and more about tidying up, getting organised, meal prepping, and planning to create a sense of calm and order.
By investing a few hours on Sunday, you can reclaim your time and energy throughout the week.
If you think about your home like a business, you wouldn’t rock up on Monday morning to deliver a training without at least preparing your deck and materials in advance… so why do we try to run our homes without the same level of preparation?!
Benefits of a Sunday Reset for Busy Families
The benefits of incorporating a Sunday reset into your family’s routine are countless. Here are some of the most impactful:
Boosts Productivity: A tidy home and a clear plan lead to a more productive week. By preparing meals and organizing tasks, you’ll free up valuable time during the week for more important things like spending time with your family.
Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Waking up to a clear and organised home on a morning can significantly reduce stress and anxiety. A calm environment promotes a calm mind.
Improves Family Harmony: Involving the whole family in the Sunday reset can be a great bonding experience. Assigning simple tasks to children teaches them responsibility and teamwork.
Saves Time and Money: Meal prepping for the week prevents last-minute take aways, saving both time and money. Having a plan also helps you avoid impulse purchases. But its not all about food! Keeping on top of life admin like birthdays, insurance renewals and deadlines are all important ways to save time and money in the week.
Creates a Peaceful Home Environment: A clean and organised home is a sanctuary. A Sunday reset helps you maintain this peaceful environment, making your home a place of rest and rejuvenation.
What’s on my Sunday Reset Routine?
The key to stress-free week planning for me, is making sure I’ve done my Sunday Reset Routine. It doesn’t need to take up your whole day, be done in one block of time, or rule your weekend. As long as you chip away at it and get it done, thats all that matters.
Here’s my simple checklist to get you started on your own Sunday reset journey:
Top Ups: The nappy caddy, the sugar tea and coffee pots, the hand wash, is there petrol in the car… have a quick wander round and top up what you can so everything is full and ready for the week ahead! I also use a weekly pill pot for my vitamins and supplements and keep it by my alarm clock so I don’t forget to take them 🙈
Clothes: While I don’t include laundry in my reset (thats part of my weekly cleaning routine) I do like to make sure all of the uniforms and clothes are laid out for the week. For Amelia, I have little baskets which I set out her PJs, a bedtime nappy, an outfit and all the bits I need to top up her changing bag for the week.
The Whiteboard Family Planner: Like most family’s, we keep our calendars with us on our phone and we have a shared calendar for all our family commitments, but for someone with ADHD that makes things so easy to miss. Every Sunday I double check my calendar, and look at your schedule for the week and update the board. I’ll plan in any daily tasks I need to include and write on any important appointments, birthdays, etc. so I don’t miss them.
Meal Plan & Prep: I do my food shop for the week on Friday’s, which means I more than likely have bought things I need to prep. By planning the meals for the week and doing some light prep, like chopping vegetables or marinating meat it really makes a huge difference to how quick I get food on the table through the week. Now I know its a bit weird to shop before I plan but because we’ve been doing this so long I tend to have most ingrediants for our mid-week meals on hand, or I’ll maybe pick up a new ingrediant that inspires me and work it into the plan. We tend to try new recipes on a weekend so this set up just works for us, but you do you and see what works for you. If you’re not sure how to meal plan for the week, check out our Meal Planning for Beginners guide for tips.
Tidy Up: Walk through the house and put things back in their proper places. Don’t worry about deep cleaning—just focus on being clear and tidying. Things like coats chucked to one side, shoes lying around, and misplaced bags can all mount up and cause chaos when you search for them in a rush.
The Weekly Meeting: We always end our Sunday evening with a quick weekly meeting. We use this to check in on finances, important dates (birthdays, events and renewals) and have a final run through of the week ahead so we’re on the same page on our responsibilities for the week ahead.
Recharge: Take some time for yourself to relax and recharge before the busy week begins. Cosy up with a brew, watch a film, finish off those weekend treats ready to start Monday with a clean slate.
What’s not on my Sunday Reset Routine?
In our house, the Sunday Reset routine is not about saving one day a week for every single chore at home. In our house Sundays are usually sacred family time, we quite often visit or host relatives.
Cleaning: Typically I run through our weekly cleaning schedule on Fridays while Amelia naps, or on Saturday’s while Dan takes Ted and Amelia for a long walk. Now we are a busy family and we both work full time jobs, so sometimes we will occasionally block out a Sunday to catch up on bigger chores but typically a weekly reset will not include a huge cleaning spree. The last thing I want to be doing is spending half of the only two days we have as a full family together, cleaning. That is NOT how I want Amelia to remember her childhood!
Laundry: Do a load or two of laundry every day. Chipping away at it saves being overwhelmed on a weekend.
Final Thoughts
By implementing a Sunday reset, you can create a more organised, peaceful, and productive home for your entire family. Start small, be consistent, and enjoy the benefits of a calmer week… thank me later 😘
